Aircraft Maintenance Engineering in Ireland

AME Training in Ireland
Based in a state of the art training facility, the Aviation Institute is an approved EASA Part 147 Training Organization located near Shannon Airport in the West of Ireland. The Aviation Institute is part of an independent aviation company with over 50 years of aviation experience. Aircraft Maintenance Engineers maintain, inspect, modify and repair an aircraft's airframe, engine and avionics. They also perform sheet metal repairs and corrosion removal on an aircraft's airframe. The programme is designed to bring students through the fundamentals of Aircraft System Design, Human Factors, Maintenance Practices and Aviation Legislation required to become a competent Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. On successful completion, participants will be capable of carrying out maintenance engineer duties. The programme is fully approved by EASA.

Programme Content

Programme Structure

  • Duration: 2 years (24 months)
  • Training Split: 50% Theoretical + 50% Practical
  • EASA Part 66 regulation standard
  • 12 modules with multiple-choice examinations
  • Minimum attendance: 3,072 hours
  • Pass mark required: 75% for all examinations

Year 1: Theoretical Training

21 weeks of comprehensive theoretical knowledge

Theoretical Training

  • Physics - Matter, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Light and Sound
  • Electrical Fundamentals - Basic electrical theory
  • Digital Techniques & Electronic Instrument Systems
  • Materials and Hardware - Aircraft materials and hardware
  • Maintenance Practices - Safe maintenance procedures

Aviation Specific Modules

  • Basic Aerodynamics - Theory of flight and stability
  • Human Factors - Physical and cognitive ergonomics
  • Aviation Legislation - Laws governing aviation
  • Aeroplane Aerodynamics Structures and Systems
  • Gas Turbine Engine - Turbine engine operation
  • Propeller - Construction and maintenance

Year 2: Practical Training

Hands-on experience in two comprehensive phases

Phase 1 - Workshop Training

Duration: 11 weeks

Training is delivered in dedicated training workshops where you will gain the hand skills and know-how to use the tools and instrumentation required to safely maintain modern jet aircraft.

Phase 2 - Live Environment

Duration: 6.5 weeks + 1 year maintenance experience

Practical training conducted in the busy environment of live aircraft maintenance at Aviation Group on Boeing 737, 757, and 767 aircraft.

Phase 2 Activities

You will be actively involved in actual maintenance activities, carrying out or assisting in tasks such as:

  • Engine replacement
  • Cabin refurbishment
  • Structural repair
  • Flight control replacements
  • Landing component replacements
  • System testing

Certification & Outcome

Programme Completion Requirements

  • Pass all examinations with 75% minimum
  • Complete all practical assessments successfully
  • Meet minimum attendance requirement of 3,072 hours
  • Complete all module hours as required

License Achievement

  • EASA Part 66 A1 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer License
  • Successful completion of EASA Part 147 approved programme
  • One year of practical experience included
  • Globally recognized EASA qualification
