Aircraft Maintenance Engineering
Introduction to Aircraft Maintenance Engineering

AME Responsibility
What Does an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Do?
- Ensures aircraft operates properly and safely through regular inspections
- Makes repairs, troubleshoots problems, and conducts preventative maintenance
- Performs civil aviation inspections as per authority requirements
- Services airframes, engines, electrical/hydraulic systems, landing gear, and instruments
- Uses specialized tools including x-ray machines to detect invisible defects
- Maintains detailed logs of all repairs and work performed on aircraft
- Certifies aircraft airworthiness before return to service
- Works with sophisticated diagnostic equipment and computer systems
AME Training Programme
Aircraft maintenance engineering is not a degree or diploma course, but a comprehensive training programme. On completion of the training, a licence is issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The three-year training programme includes both theoretical knowledge and extensive practical experience on actual aircraft.
- Year 1: Basic aircraft rules, regulations, and aviation fundamentals
- Year 2: General engineering, maintenance, aerodynamics, metallurgy, electronics
- Year 3: Specialization in light/heavy aircraft, piston/jet engines, or helicopters
- Structural aircraft type courses in mechanical or avionics stream
- DGCA examination upon completion for license certification
- 48 months work experience required for Licensed AME (L-AME) status

- Higher qualification in science with PCM accepted
On Job Training
What is OJT or Industrial Training?
On Job Training (OJT) or Industrial Training is a mandatory 6-month practical training period for AME students, typically conducted in the final semester (VI). This hands-on training must be obtained from organizations approved for maintenance work by the respective aviation authority. Students gain real-world experience at airline companies or MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) facilities.
The Path to Licensed AME (L-AME)
To become a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME), you must meet the examination and experience requirements of Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance Personnel Licensing. The license is issued after completing 48 months of work in the aviation maintenance sector and successfully passing written examinations prescribed by the respective aviation authorities.
- Complete 3-year AME training programme with theoretical and practical components
- Pass DGCA written examinations covering all aircraft systems
- Accumulate 48 months (4 years) of documented work experience
- Work must be at aviation authority-approved maintenance organizations
- Demonstrate proficiency in aircraft type-specific maintenance
- Meet medical and background check requirements
- Obtain regulatory approval on specific aircraft types (Airbus, Boeing, etc.)
AME Opportunities
Worldwide AME Requirements
Boeing forecasts that 601,000 aircraft maintenance technicians will be needed over the next 20 years globally. The greatest demand is in the Asia-Pacific region (243,500 technicians) and North America (92,500 technicians). Aviation industries worldwide have been on an expansion spree, creating unprecedented opportunities for qualified AMEs.
- USA: Median salary $55,980/year, 2% employment growth projection
- Europe: High demand in UK, France, Germany, and East European countries
- Asia-Pacific: Highest global demand with 243,500 positions needed
- Middle East: Expanding aviation sector in UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia
- By 2020: Estimated 20,000 AME positions needed per major aviation country
- Global aircraft fleet: ~500,000 passenger/cargo + 4 million private aircraft
- Career progression to supervisory, inspector, and specialized roles available
