Aircraft Maintenance Engineering in India

AME Training in India
Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) in India represents one of the most dynamic and rewarding career paths in aviation. As India's aviation industry experiences exponential growth, the country has established itself as a premier destination for aspiring aircraft maintenance engineers seeking world-class training at accessible costs. With India projected to become the world's third-largest aviation market by 2030 and airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and Vistara operating fleets of over 700+ aircraft combined, the demand for certified AME professionals has reached unprecedented levels. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) regulates and maintains stringent standards that ensure Indian-trained engineers meet international benchmarks. Students benefit from studying in their home country while gaining globally recognized qualifications, hands-on experience with modern aircraft, and access to a rapidly expanding job market offering competitive salaries and international career opportunities.

DGCA AME Training

Program Overview

The DGCA AME License program is India's flagship aviation maintenance training course, recognized globally for its rigorous standards. This comprehensive program spans 3-4 years and integrates in-depth theoretical instruction covering 16 DGCA-approved modules with extensive hands-on practical training. Students work with real aircraft components, engines, and avionics systems, learning to diagnose faults, perform maintenance procedures, and certify aircraft for flight operations. Upon completion and passing DGCA examinations, graduates receive an AME license that authorizes them to sign aircraft maintenance release documents - a critical responsibility that ensures aviation safety across India and internationally.

Course Categories

Category B1.1 - Mechanical (Turbine)

The B1.1 category focuses on mechanical aspects of turbine-powered aircraft. This specialization prepares students to work on commercial jets and turboprop aircraft, covering airframe structures, systems, and gas turbine engines.

DGCA Module Examinations

All AME candidates must pass DGCA-conducted module examinations to qualify for licensing. These objective-type exams cover theoretical knowledge across all studied modules. A minimum score of 75% is required in each paper. Examinations are held 4 times annually at DGCA regional offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Bangalore. Candidates can appear for modules individually upon completion of training in that subject. Each module certificate remains valid for 10 years, giving flexibility in completing the full license requirements. Failed attempts can be retried in subsequent examination sessions.

AME License Issuance

After clearing all module exams, completing basic training, and accumulating required On-Job Training hours (documented in an approved logbook), candidates qualify to apply for an AME License from DGCA. The application involves submitting module certificates, training completion proof, logbook, medical certificate, and prescribed fees. DGCA verifies credentials and issues the license typically within 2-3 months. The AME License is valid for 5 years and must be renewed with proof of continued aviation maintenance work. License holders can add aircraft type ratings (Boeing 737, Airbus A320, etc.) by completing type-specific training and practical experience on those aircraft.
